Can be found in the Zskera Vault instance in random rooms. It doesn't seem that whatever chest this correlates to is a guaranteed spawn within the same week as I've opened all 29 doors and can find no chest that uses it.

Either way, it doesn't seem to have an expiration on it like some vault items so hold onto it until we're sure what it opens.

UPDATE: This week there was a Locked Research Chest in the main lobby area of my vault (not in a locked room). When unlocked it consumed the key. It contained 2x Dormant Primordial Fragment and 19x Elemental Overflow

I cleared all vault doors today, and the chest in my main area requires this key--but none spawned or dropped. So now I am just fishing to try and get one in the vat.

I ran this to check the weekly vat quests, but there is no triggered hidden quest for the research key;

I got the key last week and this week the chest was sitting on the bottom floor. It didn't have anything interesting inside: 2 Dormant Primordial Fragment and 19 Elemental Overflow.

The chest that was opened by this key dropped the new Berylmane pet for me.

Some replies to comments have suggested that if you haven't found this key randomly yet, and if your vault has a Disgusting Vat, you can simply fish this key out of it. Those replies are true.

What is not known is the % of drop chance to get this key. Form my personal experience, it took 49 casts to finally get it. A comment reply on this page said it took about 71 casts till they got it, another reply said it took 21 tries, and another reply said it took 20 tries.

While fishing for this key, as a bonus, you can also fish up:

The battle pet Emmah, which I got lucky and obtained within my first few casts into the vat.
Dormant Primordial Fragment, only got a few of those in my 49 cast attempts
Neltharion Gift Token, only got 1 of these in my 49 cast attempts
Prismatic Fragment. Only got 2 of these in my 49 cast attempts

I noticed though, after getting a few of each in the list above, I didn't get anymore. So there may be a hidden value here on how many times you can get them before it zeros out. I suspect this may be due to the fact that a person could find a way to automate this, because the bobber is predictable (A long time ago, fishing was exactly like this -- The bobber was predictable and people found ways to automate fishing, causing Blizzard to break those methods by randomizing where the bobber appeared)

However, among your casts you will also get quite a bit of the following grey quality items: Clump of Tar, A Gold Tooth, Crumbling Bone, and Old Boot

So if you have the research chest in your vault but don't get the key and don't have the Disgusting Vat available to fish from, are you just out of luck and lose out on the chest for the week?

Heads up, if you were silly like me and destroyed the key, you can fish it up again in the Disgusting Vat. Might take a little time, but it will pop.

Another heads up... I unlocked the chest and opened it but did not loot it in time and the chest closed. When I went to open it again it was locked again and I couldn't open it again due to it consuming the key on the first time i opened it :( it only took the time for me to take a sip out of my drink before it closed on me. So, if you open it, ya better loot it! Nothing in my mailbox yet, hopefully it ends up there, I'll update if it does. Don't make my mistake!

It had the speck of bronze dust in it too :((((
