Arcanist Doan is located at the end of the Library wing.

Doan is a mage that can do the following things:

Arcane Explosion (instant small range AoE Damage)
AoE Silence (fairly long range, make sure your healers stay back a bit)
Polymorph (Polymorph's the target with 2nd most aggro)

In Addition when he gets to 50% life or so he will give himself a shield and prepare a Fire Nova attack that will hit everyone within 25 yards or so for 400-600 damage. Have everyone back off during this time to the hallway to prevent damage.

I'd even say stay outside the door if you are a caster. Both times I've been inside the main room for the fight I've been hit with his silence AoE, and as a the main healer that REALLY stinks.

a level 40 feral druid can solo this one. stealth in, go in his room's corner, HoT's up, and bearform kill him. Mind the 2 mobs on the entrance.

edit: i managed to got him on a level 38 druid after patch 2.3. A good exercise for new feral druids, since you need to handle well both of your fighting forms and heal. I don't recommend Healing Touch because of the frequent silences, use HoTs instead.

41 feral druid easy with one health potion, agility elixir, and MotW. I used cat and when I healed I threw a moonfire on him. Also, always use regrowth before healing touch in case of silence, though I resisted a lot of his silence spells.

Warning:

AoE attack will kill anyone wearing sloth and with leather if your a low enough level. I suggest either interrupting him or walking away when he starts to cast it.

Soloed with my rogue 36 (ex top geared lvl29 twink: windstorm hammer with mongoose, AGM, etc...).
He have 8436hp and he is immune to poisons -_-

As his description indicates, he was once a member of the Silver Hand. You can see him as he was in the Southshore inn of Old Hillsbrad. He is among members of the Order who were present for the transformation of the crystal of light, the foundation of the Ashbringer. His Old Hillsbrad entry:

If anyone is wondering: no, none of the weapons he drops are enchantable with TBC enchants. This is because required level overrides item level, which is only taken into account if there is no required level. Hope this was helpful.

This guy now has a fire nova type attack. It can easily hit a clothie for over 800 fire damage.

Soloed with a lvl 36 rogue.

-Pop your CD's and stick some sharp objects in him.
-At around 50% he'll do the fire nova; sprint, run away and bandage.
-Loot stuff

my rogue and a guildmate (druid) stealthed all the way to him and killed him. we did that 4-5times and the ring dropped :D

later, i was doing Graveyard to help a friend and the daggar dropped. guess i was lucky?

Doan, he's a cool boss, when he says something about cleansing flame: GET BACK, that spell does A LOT of AOE damage, to Lv. 30 Cloth user was very damaging, my strategy, as a fire mage, is to hit him with despell after used his first spell, then use firebolt.

His drops are good, and make up part of the Mages "Set" (Note: These items have NO special, set, bonuses, just all drop from bosses in SM, are mage gear, and look good together) This "Set" consists of: Robe of Doan, Mantle of Doan, Hypnotic Blade, Orb of the forgotten seer, Nercrotic Wand, Whitemane's Chapeau, and Triune Amulet.

how much exp does he give? I'm thinking of bringing my twink in here (29) only got 2 bars lefyt or so, managed to get Thermaplugg's Left Arm by clearing up to him and then simply getting to him and owning him....

I checked the stats on Arcane Bubble, and it says he can't attack when he uses it. Unless casting damage spells doesn't count as attacking, it's not entirely true.

He has a silence so It`s good to have a pally(healer if sth happens to the main) and when Doan uses Detonate you should back a little the cast is NOT interruptible! His Detonate hits everyone close to him for about 850dmg The cast time is enough to run away and then get quickly back to the fight =] Oh and Mages can use http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=10223

Soloed as a lvl 40 Boomkin!

Open up with starfire

Insect swarm/Moonfire (make sure you cast the one you didnt do next)

Wrath Spam until low health, pot yourself, then drain your mana

Pop out of moonkin and kite him around the circle, healing yourself every so often, once he gets to half health, he will mass aoeso try to place him near a wall so you can run to the opposite and heal yourself.

After the large aoe, just continue hitting him with your weapon, do this until his mana is completly drained.

once his mana is drained, Innervate.

Pop back in to moonkin and spam wrath while keeping insect swarm and moonfire up on the target.

Heal when needed, as his silence should be missing a lot due to DR.

He should be dead, make sure to /dance by him!

A friend of mine was running my priest (level 28 maybe at the time) through library to get some of the gear that Doan drops, i wasn't paying attention when my friend went to fight him, so he did the first AoE which did some damage, but i didn't expect the second so i didn't bother to heal, well he did the second AoE and I died. so if your a lowbie being run through Library, stay back into the hallway or a little ways away from where whoever is running you happens to be or you will die, had to learn this one the hard way

While getting some Rumsey Rum Black Label from OLD Hillsbrad Foothills i saw an act in the inn about the ashbringer and noticed that there was an NPC named Arcanist Doan, i was thinking i remembered that name, and struck me he was part of the scarlet monastery(because i was trying to get the Epic 29 ring The Dead Mans Hand) and when i looked him up to compare both they had the EXACT haircut and looks...

thats... pretty much it lol.

Kind of a shame, Arcanist Doan who used to be the dream of all casters because of the great caster loot, is now far less interesting for alt levelers because of heirlooms. If you look at his loot table, he drops a cloth chestpiece, cloth shoulders, a one-hand caster weapon and a staff for casters.

Pretty much exactly the things you'd have as heirlooms. Of course not all classes use maces, but even they are probably using the staff.

Still great for characters with no BoA shinies, of course.

Some general things when soloing as rogue:

You'll want to engage him when he is at one of the bookshelves he patrols to.
His Silence and anti-magic shield abilities won't affect you at all since no rogue attacks at this point count as spells.
You will be taking a decent amount of damage from Arcane Explosion. I had to drink a potion halfway through and use the Herbalism HOT quite early on.
When he yells "Burn in righteous fire!", run over to the exact other side of the room. I was able to out-range the spell this way since I had him at the edge of the room. You can bandage at this point, although I didn't have to.
Pop all of your cooldowns, including Evasion, when you return from the other side of the room.

Through using these, I killed him in exactly 61 seconds as a level 35 rogue with Herbalism and Alchemy, of which both helped.

Stupidly easy to solo on a level 36 enhance shammy with looms, just LoS his detonate and keep healed and earth shock up. The first boss is way harder.

Patch 10.1.7 has re-added the original Scarlet Monastery instances, so Arcanist Doan has returned as well.
