Start the quest with Agapanthus. Interact with the Obsidian whelpling. The whelpling will run off and stop. Target the whelpling when he stops running, then use your extra action button near it, then proceed to herd it back to it's nest marked with an arrow above it. Remember the herding kittens quest? Yeah, same thing, except now it's a whelpling! Good luck!

When chasing the whelp up the stairs back to the nest, make sure you guide it up the center of the stairs or it will get stuck.

If it gets stuck, you can chase it back down the stairs and try again. Annoying but at least the quest isn't entirely bugged I guess.

yeah if she gets stuck and nothing you do gets her to move out of her spot, abandoning the quest will reset the whelp.

This is one of those annoying "herd the kittens" type of quests. Speak to the hatchling and she'll dart over to where the sandbox is. Once you approach her and use the action button, she'll move away from you each time you get near her. The goal is to "herd" her back to the nest where she started. Unfortunately, she has a tendency to get stuck in corners, so half the time you'll probably just be trying to get her out of those situations and then moving in the right direction again.

Note: Sometimes she gets stuck and approaching from any side won't make her move. In those cases, try leaping down on top of her from above and see if that works. If she gets really, really stuck and approaching her from any direction (even up) doesn't do the trick, you can abandon the quest and that will reset her back to the nest.

I thought they canned the person who designed the birds in Zereth Mortis. Instead, they moved them over to the whelpings.

This pet got stuck at a pillar and wouldn't move, I had to abandon the quest and do it again, praying it wouldn't stuck again. Bad mechanics, they should have tested this quest before it went live.

Does Blizzard not know how tag works? You tag, you don't chase the person back to the starting point.

If you pay attention to her dialogue, it cues you how to respond - but by the time I caught on to that, I'd nearly fallen off the island, had to mount up, and by then she'd reset.

For some reason, the whelp doesnt react when I approach them. Instead it reacts when I right click on them.

annoying mechanics aside, this quest feels quite cruel to the poor whelp who does NOT seem to be enjoying the 'game' at all

Since no one seems to have mentioned the most critical part of this frustrating exercise, THE NEST IS ON THE PLATFORM TO THE WEST, specifically at 11.20, 57.28. Chase the hatchling straight (hah!)) west up the stairs and get this over with. Yeesh!

Completed it. Some of the comments were very helpful. The "I don't like the quest" comments not so much. The whelp was very sensitive. I found I had to approach the whelp from further away than I thought I should and you can only get it through the wider spaces.

Annoying quest. Best way I found to not get it stuck is to let it run down the stairs BEFORE pressing the sprint/chase button, turn and face it directly so that the camera is looking straight at the stairs and THEN press the chase button. It went straight back up the stairs for me.
